Product Information: The talking drum is an hourglass-shaped drum from West Africa, whose pitch can be regulated to mimic the tone and prosody of human speech. It has two drumheads connected by leather tension cords, which allow the player to modulate the pitch of the drum by squeezing the cords between their arm and body.
As one of the oldest instruments in West Africa, the talking drum was known to be used by griots, traditional historians, genealogists and storytellers, who passed oral history down from one generation to the next. Talking drums are also used during various traditional ceremonies and rituals e.g. circumcisions, religious rites, royal occasions etc.
Sold individually. Images are only representative as handcrafted designs will vary slightly.
